As a school, we believe in the importance of education as both a mechanism for facilitating opportunities in life beyond school, but also as a valuable and enriching experience for students in and of itself. Consequently, we encourage our prospective Sixth Form students to think very carefully about their A-level options and urge them to consider the subjects that they are most interested in, as well as the subjects that might facilitate their future university choices and careers.

Some subjects are vital for particular university courses, so these absolutely should be taken, but all courses and careers allow for breadth in the A-level choices made by students. Breadth in your A-level choices is not only a valuable asset for your personal development, but it also can make you stand out when it comes to future university applications, particularly at elite universities. As a result, we are asking students to consider two areas of thought when it comes to selecting their A-level choices:

i. Which three subjects do you think you need for next steps to university or a future career?

ii. If your university or career path did not require particular subjects, which three subjects would you select based solely on your passion or interest?

iii. What's the right balance between pragmatic choices which facilitate next steps, and personal preference which fulfils intellectual need and nurtures curiosity?

It may be for many students these areas overlap, but for others, this may not be the case. Both of these questions should inform your final A-level selections. This is not just a question of passion or interest, but also a question of pragmatism. For many students their A-level choices are driven solely by their answer to the first question. This is logical, but may also mean students miss a key aspect of what A-level study is about: learning. The pursuit of a career or a university place is a vital part of this process, but this should not be the only factor in their choice. Typically, university courses will only require one, or maybe two specific subjects for applicants and the other A-levels options can be more varied. This means students do have more license to choose subjects that genuinely interest them, not just the subjects that seem most closely related to their university course of choice. Often, elite universities will value breadth and variety in the A-level subjects chosen and will value an engineer who can write an essay or an economist with another language. Students should pursue their interests, alongside their university and career aspirations.

We hope by giving you these two areas to consider, it will mean you make better informed and more appropriate decisions on your A-level options.

Please choose from either three or four option choices selecting 'No Option' for Preference 4 if you wish to only opt for three choices. This is perfectly legitimate and over 50% of students at Reading School complete three A-levels rather than four.

If you want to study both Maths and Further Maths in either one block or two blocks, select Maths as one of your options and Further Maths as another. A very small number of students will have the option to study Maths and Further Maths in a single block alongside three other options but this will be dependent upon discussion with the Maths department and GCSE results. If you are planning on doing five A-levels, please remember that there is very limited value studying five A-levels if at least three of them are not awarded top grades. Over the last five years on average just 2% of students have completed five A-levels. If you are applying to do this, select your fifth preference as your reserve and indicate in your first sentence of your personal statement that you wish to do five A-levels.
